Auto review: 2025 Volvo EX40 delivers compact luxury perfectly

As the electric vehicle market is still in full swing, Volvo rises to the top with the release of its compact SUV, the EX40. This year, Grasso’s Garage has tested the XC60 and XC90 in both hybrid forms and absolutely loved everything about them. The EX40, a full electric compact SUV, was certain to be a fun one.

On the interior, we noticed similarities to the EX40's gas-powered version, the XC40. These included a 12.3-inch digital driver display, plush seating that delivers typical Volvo luxury and comfort, USB-C ports, Google digital services, and luxury upgrades such as laminated panoramic sunroof with power sunshade, 2-zone climate control, mechanical seat cushion extensions, heated front and rear seats, air purifier, and 360 degree surround view camera.

On the exterior, the EX40 exemplifies Volvo excellence with its 20-inch diamond cut wheels, LED headlights, and all of the safety features that you expect, including blind spot, collision avoidance, pilot assist, run-off road protection, lane departure warning, whiplash protection and much more. Our tester came with the Ultra package, which had its own set of upscale features included in the price with no extra add-ons.

Powering the 2025 Volvo EX40 Twin Motor Ultra, was a fully electric, zero-tailpipe emission, 82kWh lithium-ion battery with a shift-by-wire single-speed transmission. This combination boasts 402 horsepower and 494 pound-feet of torque. Torque from electric vehicles tends to be instantaneous and in this respect the EX40 does not disappoint; having good power with a slice of luxury is a great combination.

As a Volvo connoisseur myself, the EX40 just adds the cherry on the top to the success the company has achieved with the XC40. The aesthetics of the compact electric EX40 are what really do it for me. The SUV's boxy yet luxurious styling sets off a great example of comfort, storage and utility, while still maintaining the standard of luxury that Volvo consumers demand. Although we only noticed a 260-mile range on a full charge, which seems low in today’s consumer market compared to the competition, for small-town driving and city commuting, the EX40 delivers nicely and is rightly priced for consumers looking for that extra piece of luxury that other brands are missing.
