An early-morning shooting at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque left one person dead and another wounded, prompting a shelter-in-place order, officials said Friday.

The suspect remains at large and “may still be on campus” as of 8 a.m. local time, the school said in a statement shared on social media.

The UNM Police Department said it received reports of gunshots fired near Casas del Rio, a privately owned on‑campus housing complex in central Albuquerque, in the early morning hours of July 25.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found two individuals with gunshot wounds.

“One victim is deceased, and the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries,” school officials said, adding that the Albuquerque central campus had been closed “out of an abundance of caution.”

Authorities have yet to release the identities of the victims. No further information is available at this time.
