Authorities following up on 'new leads' in Nancy Guthrie disappearance
Published in News & Features
Arizona authorities are taking another look at “new leads” in the suspected abduction of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie’s elderly mother, Nancy, who has been missing for over a week, as the deadline for an alleged $6 million ransom passed without payment.
The 84-year-old matriarch was last seen at her Tucson home on the evening of Jan. 31 and reported missing when she missed church the next morning. Authorities quickly established she’d likely been kidnapped.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Monday that its investigation would now include “the expansion of the search and follow-up on new leads,” according to a notice sent to media outlets.
PCSD addressed pushback from those anxious to know more, explaining that despite “significant public interest … investigators need time and space to do their work.
“If and when relevant information becomes available, it will be shared,” continued PCSD. “This is all part of the investigative process, as the search for Nancy expands and new leads come in. To preserve the integrity of this criminal investigation, details of that process are not being released at this time.”
An alleged ransom note demanded the millions in cryptocurrency be deposited into an account by 5 p.m. Mountain Standard Time on Feb. 9. An FBI spokesperson told AZFamily Monday that no contact was made between the Guthries and potential suspects.
No such deposit was made by Monday evening, per TMZ, which was among the outlets to have received the notice.
PCSD said that the FBI is running point on “all aspects related to any ransom note(s) or communications involving the Guthrie family.”
