SAN JOSE, Calif. — Bay Area music fans can certainly be excused for wondering if they’ll actually get to witness the troubled Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire co-headlining tour or not.

The problems began back in early August, on the evening of the trek’s originally scheduled date at Chase Center in San Francisco, when EWF drummer John Paris experienced a medical emergency — reportedly related to a cardiac concern — and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Concert organizers responded quickly and pulled the plug on the gig literally minutes before showtime.

The Chase concert was then rescheduled for late September, with another drummer set to fill in for EWF while Paris continues to deal with severe health issues.

A few weeks later, the other half of the concert equation — Richie — experienced his own medical concerns and checked himself into intensive care at a St. Louis hospital following a show on Aug. 29. He reportedly underwent cardiac tests there and was soon released to go back home, so that he could rest up and get ready to rejoin EWF on their co-headlining Sing a Song All Night Long Tour.

That’s a lot for any tour to handle — especially in such a short amount of time — but the road show is still on and (re)scheduled to resume on Sept. 26 at Chase Center. Here’s hoping that no more drama will plague either act and that fans will indeed get the chance to enjoy a night of Richie and EWF classics in San Francisco.
