Jason Mraz gets frosty with it on new song, 'Snow in San Diego'

SAN DIEGO — Forget about Halloween! The yuletide holidays are approaching and Jason Mraz is wasting no time getting in the spirit of the season.
His newly released “Snow in San Diego” is a tender piano ballad that finds the multiple Grammy Award-winner and 2009 Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee pledging his almost undying love with the promise: “I will love you until there’s snow in San Diego / Until there’s snowmen with sand between their toes / I will love you until a blizzard puts a “Brr!” in our burrito / I will love you until there’s snow in San Diego.”
The “almost” qualifier above is for those nitpickers who point out that — although the last measurable snowfall in the city of San Diego was recorded in 1967 — there were some flurries in 2008 and 2013 in Poway, Rancho Bernardo and Carmel Mountain.
Either way, Mraz’s new song is as playful as it is earnest, a point he acknowledged in a statement released Monday morning.
” ‘Snow in San Diego’ is one of those ‘I’ll love you forever’ kind of songs, set within the historical and tropical scenery of my home, San Diego,” said Mraz, a longtime North County resident. “The songs are intended to bring joy and familiarity, holiday warmth with a wink. I promise it’s heartfelt, and also a little ridiculous.”
Mraz has yet to record a full Christmas album, although he has released several holiday-themed songs over the years. One of the most recent, “Christmas in Quarantine,” was released in late 2020 during the pandemic shutdown.
“Holiday music taught me how to play and write,” Mraz said. “It is truly festive and allows me to be both sentimental and silly. Listeners who know my humor and enjoy my lighthearted side will love this. And there’s more to come!”
Mraz will perform “Snow in San Diego” at the San Diego Symphony’s Dec. 18, 19 and 20 concerts at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. It is not yet known if he will also include the song when he performs with the orchestra at its Nov. 21 gala fundraising concert at Jacobs Music Center.
The lyrics to “Snow in San Diego” include a reference to two telephone area codes that are well known to local residents: “I will love you until it flurries in 619 or 760 / I will love you until there’s snow in San Diego.” (The 858 area code was omitted, presumably because it does not rhyme with San Diego.)
The song concludes with the acknowledgement that global warming may require Mraz to shift gears (and locales): “And if climate change brings winds of change / Then, we’ll move to Mexico / And I will love you until there’s snow in Acapulco.
