Mets comeback falls short as they fall to Cardinals in first game of doubleheader
Published in Baseball
The New York Mets nearly crawled their way back, but they were stopped short.
Trailing 6-3 entering the eighth inning, the Mets added two runs on an RBI-single by Francisco Lindor to pull within one. Juan Soto walked to load the bases for Pete Alonso with one out. With the way Alonso has swung the bat this season, you couldn’t have drawn it up any better for Carlos Mendoza’s squad.
However, Alonso went down on strikes before Brandon Nimmo flew out to end the threat, leading to the Mets’ 6-5 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday afternoon. The Mets couldn’t work their magic to avoid a rubber match on Sunday night.
Blake Tidwell made his MLB debut in the first game, and he was greeted with a very unkind welcome to the big leagues. The Mets No. 15 prospect tossed 3 2/3 innings allowing six runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out two.
The right-hander was thrown to the wolves with the Mets needing some length due to the doubleheader.
Luisangel Acuna was the star of the Mets’ offense going 3 for 4 with a walk. The rookie’s slashline is up to .313/.371/.759 and has made his presence felt this season. Lindor also recorded three RBI in his 1 for 5 afternoon.
The Mets’ bullpen held down the fort and kept them within striking distance. Genesis Cabrera tossed two scoreless frames while Huascar Brazoban, Austin Warren and Reed Garrett all combined for two shutout innings.
Tylor Megill will take the ball for Mendoza in the nightcap. The right-hander looks to continue his dominant season as he’s recorded a 1.74 ERA in six starts this season. Andre Pallante toes the slab for the Cardinals. Pallante is 2-2 with a 4.13 ERA in six starts for the Cardinals.
