NEW YORK — The Yankees are promoting 19-year-old George Lombard Jr. to Double-A Somerset, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Lombard, the top farmhand in the team’s system and a top-100 prospect, has gotten off to a stellar start at High-A Hudson Valley this season, slashing .329/.496/.488 with one homer, 13 RBI and 11 stolen bases. The natural shortstop has also recorded a 23-to-22 walk-to-strikeout ratio while spending a few innings at second base and third base.

Drafted 26th overall in 2023, it’s not surprising to see Lombard reach Double-A at such a young age. The Gulliver Preparatory product impressed members of the Yankees roster, coaching staff and front office in spring training as a first-time invitee to big league camp.

“Great attitude. Really hard worker, really athletic,” Anthony Volpe, the Yankees’ big league shortstop, said after a few weeks of working with Lombard. “The way he approaches every day, he’s very curious. I think he wants to get better and is very eager.”

“You can tell he’s been in a major league clubhouse before,” Aaron Boone added. “He’s an 80-makeup kid.”

Indeed, Lombard has spent time around big league clubhouses, as his dad, George Lombard Sr., played for the Braves, Tigers, Devil Rays and Nationals from 1998-2006. Lombard Jr., born in 2005, wasn’t alive for most of his dad’s playing career, but he tagged along when Lombard Sr. took minor league coaching jobs with the Red Sox and Braves, and then a big league gig with the Dodgers.

Lombard Sr. is now the Tigers’ bench coach.

“It’s helped me so much, both just being around my dad and listening to my dad talk about baseball, and then just being around the game and seeing how big leaguers go about their business and how they work,” the younger Lombard said during camp. “Watching that amount of baseball, just picking up little cues in the game, it’s helped me a ton.”
