Amazon reportedly in talks to buy AI startup Decart in $7B deal

Amazon is reportedly in talks to purchase the artificial intelligence startup Decart in a $7 billion deal — making it one of Amazon’s biggest recent acquisitions and one of the largest exits in Israeli tech.
Citing “people familiar with the matter,” The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that the Seattle tech titan is putting together a deal to purchase Decart, which Anthropic — the tech company behind Claude — walked away from last month after a $6 billion deal fell through.
Decart sells software that lets developers switch more easily between AI chips. The company claims its software squeezes more performance out of the expensive hardware built to handle AI tasks and run algorithms.
It’s still unclear why Anthropic, which is looking at building its own AI chips in response to an industry shortage, walked away from purchasing Decart at the last minute. Some believed Decart would struggle to find another buyer, but Amazon has apparently swooped in just a month later.
The deal is still unconfirmed. An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment. Decart did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The startup, founded in 2023 by three Israeli engineers based in Tel Aviv, has seen its valuation skyrocket as demand for AI infrastructure grows.
Amazon is competing with Nvidia to get companies to use its AI microchips, and Decart’s software potentially makes switching over workloads from other companies’ chips to Amazon’s easier.
Amazon Web Services, Amazon’s cloud computing platform, gave Decart early access to its Trainium3 chip in 2025 after being impressed by the founders, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Decart also develops AI models that edit live video as it happens and generates interactive worlds instantly. In 2024, Decart drew attention for developing a Minecraft-like game that’s generated on the fly.
If the deal goes through, it’ll be among Amazon’s priciest acquisitions, which include a $13.7 billion agreement in 2017 to purchase Whole Foods Market and a $8.5 billion deal in 2021 for the movie studio MGM. Earlier this year, Amazon confirmed it will acquire satellite firm Globalstar for almost $11.6 billion.
