Ben Affleck speaks for first time on parents' back-to-back deaths

Ben Affleck is opening up about the back-to-back deaths of his parents, who died just two months apart earlier this year.
“My parents just died, both of them, in April and in June,” Affleck said.
“It’s sort of a big thing, and it’s caused me to start thinking about my own childhood in ways that has been a little bit different,” he continued. “I’ve certainly learned to even more deeply appreciate my mom and really value and see what she did and what the the sacrifice and commitment that she made and how complete it was.”
The Oscar winner’s comments came during a recent sit-down with “Animals” co-star Kerry Washington for her podcast “Street You Grew Up On.”
Timothy Affleck died in April. His son, Casey Affleck, revealed the news to reporters in September during the the Venice Film Festival. He was 76.
“They were very important to me,” Casey said of his parents while speaking on a panel at the event, per People. “I really wanted to show this movie to them and I didn’t get to. I think they would have liked it.”
Affleck’s mother, Chris Anne Affleck, died in June at 83 years old after she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2025. An obituary published by the Boston Globe revealed that Chris was “given six months to live” at the time.
After her death, the “Gone Girl” actor uncovered some letters she’d written to her family while she was living in California, before he and his brother were born. He said reading them gave him a fresh perspective and more insight into the woman who raised him.
“First off, it’s this young woman, full of life and ambition and dreams,” the actor-director said.
“It was really fascinating,” he continued. “But of course, the thing that struck me was this has nothing to do with me. This woman had her own whole life for 30 years that had zero to do with me.”
