PITTSBURGH — Kavan Markwood, the 20-year-old who fell over the 21-foot right-field wall onto the field at PNC Park on Wednesday, is “awake and continuing to work toward making his body stronger each day,” per a post on Instagram by his girlfriend Alonna Brown. The post went up around noon on Saturday.

A similar update was posted to the family’s GoFundMe, which has raised more than $25,000 as of publication.

“As of this morning, Kavan is awake, alert, and able to speak,” wrote Jennifer Phillips, who identified herself as Brown’s mom. “After everything he’s been through since the accident on Wednesday night, this progress feels nothing short of miraculous. He still has a long road ahead of him, but today brought a moment of hope that we’ve all been holding onto.”

Brown added more in the Instagram post.

“At this time, he needs rest, peace, prayers, privacy, and all the positive thoughts and energy you can send as he continues on his journey,” Brown wrote. “... Please keep Kavan in your thoughts.”

She added “Keep fighting. Kav Markwood” and the hashtag #KAVANSTRONG.

Markwood, who played linebacker in college at Walsh University and Wheeling University, was transported to Allegheny General Hospital on Wednesday, where he was identified as “in critical condition.” The incident is considered accidental in nature.

“We hope the best for him and his family, just so he knows and his friends and family know that we’re all thinking about him and praying for the best for him,” Pirates designated hitter Andrew McCutchen said Thursday. “We just hope he pulls through. It was a tough situation. We’re definitely thinking about him. I’m definitely thinking about him, and we just hope for good news.”

Saturday’s update is good news, but both Phillips and Brown wrote that many more steps are ahead.

“Please continue to keep him in your thoughts as he begins the next phase of recovery,” Phillips wrote.
